What is Bioluminescence?
The official definition from the National Ocean Service is “the production and emission of light by a living organism. The light emitted by a bioluminescent organism is produced by energy released from chemical reactions occurring inside the organism.” So, at night, the tiny organisms light up with a blue glow from the microorganisms that live below the water’s surface.

Laguna Grande is one of three bio-bays in Puerto Rico. We are fortunate enough to have microorganisms in certain areas that create this unique effect in lagoons around the island. However, there are only a few bioluminescent bays in the world that could be compared to our Laguna Grande!
The Bioluminescent Bay Fajardo has a plethora of marine life with this special ability. This has created the perfect environment to make our water glow against the night sky when stimulated. All it takes is the wave of a paddle!
When is the Best Time to View It?
The best time to experience this naturally occurring phenomenon is during a new moon when there is less light emitted from the sky, making the microorganisms more visible. So, remember, the darker the better.

While you cannot visit Fajardo Bio Bay unaccompanied, we suggest hiring a tour guide. Here are a few tour companies in the area that provide tours and rentals. The many companies you can choose from include Eco Adventures and Enchanted Island Eco Tours.
Each company offers different times and prices throughout the day to fit your schedule. Tours tend to last about two hours each, and all the equipment you will need is included. Whichever trip you choose, a change of clothing, towels, light sandals, and—of course—waterproof cameras are recommended!
