Just across the water from Fajardo is the island of Culebra, a dedicated nature preserve that’s home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here, you can swim with sea turtles, snorkel through breathtaking coral reefs, or simply lounge in the sunshine.
Complete with diamond-dust sand, colorful marine life, and some of the top beaches in the world, it’s no wonder Culebra is considered a Puerto Rican gem. This peaceful island locale is home to countless pristine landscapes to explore and enjoy during your stay.
Situated just 20 miles of the coast of Fajardo, Culebra is a must-see spot during your next stay with us. We’ll even help you arrange your visit!
Culebra is a little over 10 square miles in size and was once used as a US Naval base. The island is surrounded by more than 20 cays and vibrant underwater seascapes. It’s perfect for those who love to enjoy ocean life snorkeling or diving. Plus, at least 20% of the island has been preserved as a National Wild Life Refuge, serving endangered sea turtles and seabirds, among other creatures.
Here are the top five things to do on Culebra.
See the Sights
We recommend renting a car so you can tool around the island. There’s so much to see. On your drive, you’ll enjoy picturesque views of crystal-clear water, white sand beaches, and native wildlife. Did you know that over 50,000 birds migrate to the island to mate and take care of their young each year? It’s true! While you’re out, don’t miss the Museum of Culebra where you’ll see ancient artifacts from pre-Columbian peoples, remnants from the US Navy, historical maps, pictures, and information about the island’s history.
Tour the Island on Bike
Culebra is about 7 miles long and 5 miles wide. It’s easy to see everything via bike. Plus, the island’s beautiful scenery provides an amazing backdrop for long, leisurely, rides. Though many people enjoy taking their bikes off-roading, we suggest staying on paved areas to avoid popping a tire or disturbing wildlife. Remember, Culebra is hot. Make sure you’re in good physical condition and bring plenty of water.
Enjoy the Water
The Caribbean Sea is part of what makes Culebra so amazing – enjoy it! We suggest hiring a captain to go sailing, boating, or fishing. Some reputable charter companies are Pez Vela, Captain Dan, and Snorkel SVI. At KPR Adventure Shop, you can rent underwater propeller scooters. These little scooters will zoom you right through the water. They’re really fun.
Rent a Kayak
If you’d like to enjoy the water at a slower pace, try kayaking. Take a kayak through the bays or around the mangroves. Plus, these secluded areas are the perfect place to bird watch and look for other wildlife. You can rent kayaks from the Culebra Bike Shop. Or, you can take a snorkel/kayak tour with Kayaking Puerto Rico or Culebra Island Adventures. Kayaking might be the best way to enjoy Culebra’s beautiful coral reefs at your own pace.
Experience the nightlife
The nightlife on Culebra may be on the quieter side, but there are plenty of things to do on the island when the sun goes down. To start, you can watch the sunset on any west-facing beach or stargaze on the shore. Plus, at Dinghy Dock you can often find live music or even Karaoke. While most establishments do close on the earlier side – typically 10 pm – some stay open late on weekends. Try catching a movie at the Cine Culebra by the library.
Culebra is a great place to spend a day or two. Not only are its beaches beautiful, but there are also a ton of fun things to do and incredible things to see.
