Puerto Rico’s rich artistic history can be sampled in a visit to the nearby San Juan Museum of Art and History, less than an hour’s drive from the Fajardo Inn. Here you can find art galleries, cultural institutions and other historical sites of all kinds that are worthwhile stops for your next trip. We can only mention a few of the most important here – check a guidebook or other online resources for a more complete list!
No matter who you ask, Ateneo Puertorriqueño is sure to be mentioned as one of the most important spots in San Juan. This combination library, school and performance space also exhibits pictures and documents, and has an art gallery with hundreds of works. Even more can be found on display at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, a relatively recent addition that presents contemporary and historical pieces of all forms. Their low admission fee makes this a must-do stop for all art fans visiting the island!
La Casa del Libro is a smaller, but equally interesting museum dedicated to books and manuscripts, including wood cuts, illustrations and official decrees from as old as the 15th century. Its size makes it easy to squeeze in or pair with other attractions in San Juan – perhaps before paying another visit to El Museo del Mar, a collection of ship models, artifacts and exhibits that make up San Juan’s only maritime museum.
Finally, the Museo de Las Americas in Old San Juan presents different exhibitions devoted to the history of Puerto Rico and the Americas through archaeological and anthropological works. Your visit could coincide with an exhibition of contemporary photographs, musical instruments, historical paintings or a work created specifically for the museum.
These are just a few of the many ways to explore the history and culture of Puerto Rico, but any place you visit is sure to enhance your stay with the Fajardo Inn!
