Just across the water from Fajardo is the island of Culebra, a dedicated nature preserve that boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean Sea. Here, you can swim with sea turtles, snorkel through breathtaking coral reefs, or simply lounge in the sunshine. But, that’s not all there is to do on this pristine island paradise. Here, are some other exciting things to do in Culebra.
It’s easy! Just rent a car or golf cart and tool around the island. There’s plenty to see. On your drive, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of turquoise water, white sand beaches, and native wildlife. In fact, over 50,000 birds flock to the island to mate and take care of their young every year. While you’re out, be sure to visit the Museum of Culebra where you’ll find ancient artifacts from pre-Columbian peoples, remnants from the US Navy, old maps, pictures, and fun facts about Culebra’s history.
Bike Around the Island
Culebra is about 7 miles long and 5 miles wide so you can easily see the whole island via bike. Plus, the island’s beautiful scenery provides the perfect backdrop for a long, leisurely, ride. Though many people enjoy taking their bikes off-roading, we suggest staying on paved areas to avoid popping a tire. And, remember, Culebra is hot. Make sure you’re in good physical condition and bring plenty of water with you on your ride.
Get Out on the Water
The Caribbean Sea is part of what makes Culebra so spectacular – so enjoy it! Hire a captain and go sailing, boating, or fishing. Some charter companies you can look into are Pez Vela, Captain Dan, and Snorkel SVI. At KPR Adventure Shop, you can rent underwater propeller scooters. These little scooters will zoom you right through the water – they’re really fun.
Want to enjoy the water at a slower pace? Paddle a kayak in the bays or around the mangroves. These secluded areas are excellent places to bird watch. You can rent kayaks from the Culebra Bike Shop. Or, you can take a snorkel/kayak tour with Kayaking Puerto Rico or Culebra Island Adventures. This is a great way to see Culebra’s beautiful coral reefs at your own pace.
Enjoy the nightlife
Well, maybe not in the traditional sense of the word, but there are plenty of things to do in Culebra when the sun goes down and the stars come up. Watch the sunset at any west-facing beach or stargaze on the shore. At Dinghy Dock you can occasionally find live music or even Karaoke. While most establishments do close on the earlier side – typically 10 pm – some stay open later on weekends. For early birds, catch a movie at the Cine Culebra by the library.
To sum up, Culebra is a lovely place to spend a day or two. Not only are its beaches beautiful, but there are also a ton of fun things to do beyond lounging in the sun. At the Fajardo Inn, we’ll help you plan your trip so you see it all. Visit our Puerto Rico Islands page to learn more about all Culebra has to offer.
