El Yunque Rainforest in Puerto Rico is a national treasure you won’t want to miss: although it only occupies a part of the island, there’s enough to see and experience here that will make a whole day of traveling worthwhile.

You don’t have to travel very far to begin with: the forest border is located less than half an hour by car from the Fajardo Inn Resort!  From there, you only have to go a bit further El Portal Tropical Forest Center, which is an excellent place to start your day at: the center includes several informational exhibits and a film about its history.

Year round you will find the conditions to reflect the tropical kind common to rainforests.  It’s good weather for a steadily-paced activity like hiking.  There are even several trails in the area for you to enjoy, including a hike to the top of the rainforest itself, where the cooling breeze makes a nice reward for your effort as you climb.  More information will be available for you at the Visitor’s Center.

Several companies in the area also provide guided tours of the rainforest.  These include offerings from VIP Tours and Eco Action Tours, which often visit popular landmarks like Coca Falls.
